The Old Pubs of Deal and Walmer (with Kingsdown and Mongeham)
By Steve Glover and Michael Rogers. Published by Bygone Publishing of Whitstable in hardback. Price: £19.99
The book covers about 400 pubs, old and new, in the above areas, some dating back to the 1600s. As it says in the introduction, the book really 'falls between two stools' since it is hopefully a good reference book (for example: listing as many landlords and dates as possible) but also an interesting read where the authors have been able to find out any stories connected to a pub (via court records, smuggling tales, etc). Certain of the pubs' histories take up as much as 4 pages, whilst others might only include 4 lines or less. Wherever possible, the authors have included old and modern photos of (former) pub buildings. The end product, however, stems from 7 years' research in countless archives and libraries, as well as talking to individual pub keepers, customers, and local people.
